Women of the Balkans for Kamala Harris
We appreciate and are looking forward to a new vision of American politics, led by the first woman president, who will build a world based on cooperation and collective resolution of global challenges. As women from the Balkans, we recognize the international significance of this historic moment. We believe that her election would be a major accomplishment for the United States and the world, including our Western Balkan region.
We are fully aware that the victory of her opponent could have serious consequences for women around the globe, including those of us in the Balkans. The potential ban on abortion, backlash in the treatment of immigration, reduction of public health care, and the rise of macho politics genuinely would reinforce already harmful bad examples. For this reason, we believe that all women worldwide should stand with Kamala Harris, trusting that she will lead us on a new path, as she is promising.
In a world facing multiple threats, including the insane idea of a nuclear conflict no one can stand alone. Her inspiring speech at the National Democratic Convention has encouraged us to actively engage and join the call upon women of the United States and worldwide, including the Balkans, to raise their voices and support Kamala Harris.
Sharing common values of equality, peace, and human rights, we expect that the new President of the United States, Kamala Harris, will dedicate her mandate to:
- Ending all wars that cause the greatest suffering to women and children, particularly the war in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip;
- Accelerating the fight against climate change and environmental destruction
- Promoting democratic values without the use of force, and learning from past mistakes to prevent extremists from regaining control over the states and societies, a situation that remains still a serious challenge in our region, 25 years after the Balkan wars ended;
- Promoting and supporting girl’s rights to education, respecting their bodies, and safe development, throughout the Global South;
- Implementing economic cooperation that genuinely addresses the reduction of global poverty and inequality;
- Supporting public health systems addressing the needs of all;
- Supporting industrial revolutions centred on people’s needs for green transformation and the use of artificial intelligence for the benefit of all, not just for the ultra-rich owners of the tech giants.
We are confident that her election will bring new hope to millions of women, girls, and young women. We trust in her ability to restore global confidence in American diplomacy, driven by the principles, values and goals of the UN Agenda 2030. We are expecting that her policies, guided by fairness and energy, will create a world that is good for women. And we know that what is good for women is good for society as a whole.
Today, more than ever, women worldwide must unite in the fight for a better and more peaceful tomorrow. Kamala Harris is our shared hope for a more peaceful and just world.
